Last week, climate blogger Leon Simmons (@leonsimons8) shared the chart below on X. It shows the average global temperature changes per month and year since 1880, using the 1880-1920 global average as a baseline.
The data for December 2024’s average global temperature change will be released in the upcoming days. Anticipate plenty of news coverage highlighting that, for the first time, the world has surpassed 1.5˚C of warming for a full year.
Passing 1.5˚C indicates that 2024 was notably warm, and it gave us a small preview of the severe climate impacts we could face if current trends continue.
However, it’s important to note that this does not mean the long-term climate has permanently crossed the 1.5˚C threshold; climate trends are measured over much longer periods of time. Nevertheless, it’s a critical reminder that we must act and demand action to cut emissions to prevent the worst effects of climate change.
If you are thinking about your resolutions for 2025, how about considering how you might get involved in taking meaningful action to protect our future?
